Teresa of Ávila, 1515-1582, founder of a Spanish order and mystic. She is believed to have been instrumental in setting up a new branch of the Carmelite order. Teresa was the first woman to be named Doctor of the Church by Pope Paul VI in 1970. Teresa of Ávila is the patron saint of Spanish authors.
